Thieves blend – how to make one and tips for using it

It wasn’t until I caught a really bad flu when my sister introduced me to the all-purpose Thieves essential oil blend, telling me it’s going to change my life. And it really did.

First, let me guide you through the story behind the Thieves blend and how it became the primary aid in fighting the Black Plague.

The first use of this blend dates back to the 15th century, when the plague devastated Europe and Asia, leaving no one intact. Losing their spice-trading business and desperate to survive, four merchants from Marseille started robbing the possessions of the ill and dead, surprisingly never catching the plague themselves. When they were finally caught, they handed out the recipe for their secret blend in exchange for a less severe punishment for their crimes.

The potent spicy blend of carefully selected essential oils, such as Clove, Rosemary, Lemon, Eucalyptus and Cinnamon essential oil, make it an ideal ally for boosting one’s immunity in the cold season. The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of the essential oils found in this blend helps purify the atmosphere, soothe respiratory problems and relieve symptoms of cold and flu.

Even though there are various readymade Thieves blends available for purchase, I prefer making my own blend by combining the key ingredients. Here’s my recipe and instructions for creating the blend, alongside some of my tips of using it around the house and for your health.

Ingredients:

  • 30 drops of Clove essential oil
  • 30 drops of Lemon essential oil
  • 25 drops of Cinnamon essential oil
  • 15 drops of Eucalyptus essential oil
  • 15 drops of Rosemary essential oil

Mix the oils in a dark glass bottle, secure the lid and shake well. Shake the bottle before each use.

Some of my favorite ways for using this blend include:

  • Diffusing

Purify the atmosphere from airborne bacteria and bring in freshness into your home by diffusing 5 drops of the blend. The anti-inflammatory properties of the essential oils found in this blend have helped me get through stubborn chest pain in just a few days of use. The pleasant scent of Clove and Cinnamon essential oil also help uplift the atmosphere, relieving minor headaches and balancing my mood.

  • DIY multi-purpose cleaning spray

If you’re into making homemade, eco-friendly cleaning products, the Thieves blend is going to become a staple ingredient in many of your recipes. Dilute 5ml of the blend in 5oz of distilled water and pour mixture in an empty spray bottle. Secure the lid and shake the bottle to help disperse the oils. I like using this spray all over the house, from cleaning the kitchen counter, refreshing the carpets and sofas, all the way to disinfecting the door knobs and bathroom utensils. I’ve also found that spraying my running shoes with this spray gets rid of the odour much more effectively than any other store-bought disinfecting spray, too.

  • Natural mouthwash

The antibacterial and antiseptic properties of the oils found in this blend makes it an ideal replacement for the usual mouthwash, and it tastes better too. Dilute 2 drops of the blend in a tablespoon of clean water and use the mixture as a regular mouthwash.
